How to Make Orange Popsicles

by Kit on December 11, 2012

Both of my kids love ice-cream but we don’t like the artificial colouring found in commercial popsicles.

I’ve even tried an expensive, imported brand of popsicles but we threw the box away after everyone had one.

Why? The whole family had bright orange, purple and red tongues! Grandma wouldn’t even touch one.

Now that I know my son is allergic to food colouring, I am more careful about buying foods that contain food colouring.

Since we couldn’t find any fruity ice-cream that didn’t contain food colouring, this Mum had to make her own.

I bought 2 cartons of 100% Sunkist orange juice (no added sugar, just pure juice) and a set of PP plastic popsicle sticks and mould.

The kids were more than happy to help me place each popsicle stick into each mould :D

Then, I poured the 100% orange juice into each mould, covered it with cling wrap (a total nuisance and a waste of money) and then popped it into the freezer.

*Note - If you plan to DIY your popsicles, look out for popsicle moulds with lids, which is more hygienic especially if there’s frozen meat in your freezer.

See how beautiful the orange is?

The pure orange juice popsicles turned out great!

Since it’s pure juice, there are no ice crystals and the home made popsicles tasted just like the ones you’d get at the store.

The kids love their orange juice popsicles. They even agreed to drinking orange juice now that they know it’s the SAME orange juice that goes into their popsicles.

Recently, the toddler yelled at me, “Orange eye cream (ice-cream)! Mummy, want orange eye cream (ice-cream)!” :D
