One Saturday morning, I decided to re-pot one of my miserable potted plants.
I love gardening but since we live in an apartment with no garden plot, I got a potted plant just to have some green around the place. In the end, the plant had to stay out on the dusty balcony since the kids could very well tip it over during their wild games!
I was watering the plant one day when I noticed that it was sprinkled with pebbles and since the plant was looking so poorly, I thought it should have a change of soil.
The boy was very excited because he’d been learning about roots and shoots from my gardening books. Hahaha, a rhyme!
Happy to get them away from the darn TV, I told him to get some gardening tools – he dug around and found a plastic pail, a plastic spade and a plastic fork – for the beach!
The toddler didn’t want to be left out either and yelled, “Me! Me! Me!” or “Mi! Mi! Mi!”, which could be “Me too! Me too!” or “Mummy! Mummy!”. I got the elder brother to find another plastic spade for her. Phew!
After dressing them up to brave the cold wind outdoors, the three of us trooped downstairs in search of rich, brown soil. The kids sure looked funny with their bright pink, green and yellow “gardening” tools.
Lucky for us, we found a patch of earth someone had just dug out:
Here’s the poor plant:
I removed the pebbles and scattered them next to some rocks surrounding the landscaped gardens.
Then, I knocked the pot a bit to loosen the soil and lifted the plant out to show them the roots:
Then, I set the little gardeners to work by getting them to scoop rich, brown soil into the pot:
It was really, really cold and the boy was yelling,
“Hurry up, Mummy! I’m sooooo cold!”
Don’t you think the toddler looks cute with her tiny ladle? LOL
Once they’d filled up half the pot with soil, I replaced the plant and then asked them to top up with more soil.
Again, they dug and dumped soil furiously and in a few minutes, we were done. They were really excited!
We hurried back home where I rinsed off the gardening utensils and then watered the re-potted plant. Here’s the plant in its fresh, new soil. Please tell me it looks fresher?
Now, the kids will check on the little plant to see if it’s growing.
Next?
He wants to plant fruits and flowers!
I wonder if it’s even possible? In any case, I’ll be checking out pots of herbs and flowers we could grow on our balcony ![]()

Marvel loves to watering the plants. I don’t have a big garden, just a small concentred yard mango tree, lemon tree, kietna tree (the popular orange for chinese new year, i don’t know the english name) and other small trees, mostly potted. And in the end, he’ll ” watering” him self too, LOL.
I’ve bought some herbs and vegetable seeds, have to plant them with more will power, hopefully soon there’s tomatoes, carrots, etc growing out :p
Lilis – Your garden sounds really nice! I’m still too busy to check out any potted plants or seeds
When I moved in to the house, there’s not much plants there, only the mango tree & 1 other tree (i chopped it down later since it got so many caterpillars & never bear fruit). then after PIL moved to their new home, we do some plants shopping, start from bamboo, frangipani bali, etc. Since it’s concentrated yard, we only buy potted plants, but it do make a difference
I’m dreaming a small vegetables garden, but too busy/lazy to action :p
Lilis – Your garden sounds really promising! I am truly envious ok. Now, get off your butt and grow those greens. Then, Marvel can enjoy some nice, organic fruits / veggies
So is your repotted plant growing well?
A Mom’s Diary – Amazingly, it’s still alive especially after surviving a science experiment i.e. SOMEONE pulled the plant out to check on something
Then, he nearly drowned it by watering it 3-4 times a day!
I was so busy I forgot about it until Hubby announced, “Your plant is going to die!!!”. Thank God I rescued it.
Now, the little gardener reports that he only waters it once a day and that he’s seen shoots
