AVENT BPA-free PES bottles crack easily!

by KittyMom on June 22, 2010

I heard about the leaks in AVENT’s BPA-free bottles. I also heard about the cracks.

But since I was stuck with the original AVENT bottles for a long time, I’ve had no problems even though my boy will frequently drop his water bottle on the floor or let it roll off the sofa.

Until, of course, it’s time for him to change to a new AVENT bottle – no matter what I did, he just will NOT try either the MAM or Tommee Tippee bottles I bought.

Thus, I had to take out my precious stash of super expensive 4 AVENT BPA-free PES bottles to replace his old, scratched AVENT bottles.

He had only used the bottles for ONE WEEK when one day, he was naughty (or playful) in not wanting to reach out to take the water bottle after I’d refilled it.

Crash! The BPA-free PES bottle fell just once to the floor and look at the size of that crack! There goes a perfectly new bottle that cost me nearly RM40. You can imagine how MAD I was when that happened…

Luckily, I managed to grab 2 boxes of AVENT’s PP bottles (3 x 9 oz) at a baby shop for RM65.50 (20% discount). Since he is such an active (and clumsy!) boy, PP bottles are much better for him.

I wanted the baby girl to use the PP bottles too but since someone is still carrying her bottles for her, I think she’s better off with the AVENT BPA-free PES bottles.

Sigh, don’t you think these bottles are *expensive* since we need to change them once the bottles have scratches inside?

the older ones never cracked when rye li dropped them all the time. last year when haye li dropped one, it cracked too. it’s either the quality sucks of that the BPA ones are not as durable!

Wen – The old ones had BPA in them while the new ones don’t, that’s why.

syn – I remember sounding very surprised when you told me about it. The boy’s not using PES bottles – I’ve switched him to the AVENT PP bottles already. And the girl’s happily on MAM now :D

KittyCat – my 5mo has been on PES avent bottles since born.. the only leaking i experienced was due to the tightening of the bottle… i even blogged about it..

Asides, my boy too is pretty fierce and pushing the bottle and dropping it, never experienced cracking so far.. *touchwood* weren’t PES meant to be the more durable ones?

Karishma – If I remember correctly, AVENt produced the PES bottles in response to the BPA problem and if you read my post on AVENT bottles, you’ll find that BPA is a chemical that contributes to the “hardness” of the polycarbonate (PC) bottles.

I’m guessing that this could have caused the PES bottles to be more brittle. My boy has been using, dropping and throwing his AVENT bottles for close to 5 years and I’ve never experienced any cracks.

This ONE crack that broke a NEW bottle is enough for me to stop using PES bottles. Both of us are now happy with AVENT’s PP bottles – he can happily go about his daily life without Mummy nagging him to ‘be careful’ :D

I have 3 more AVENT PES bottles – for now, I’m keeping them for my baby girl (hopefully, she’s gentler than the brother) but I’d prefer her to go for PP bottles too i.e. MAM.

i just experienced the same bottle breaking a few days ago. it is with avent BPA free (the honey tinted bottles). i have just switched to the bpa free bottles from the clear pp ones last june. after 2 months of use, my 20-month old boy just dropped his bottle on our carpeted floor and voila! it broke… i plan to send a complaint to philips-avent uk. do you know how?

Kit September 2, 2010 at 9:38 PM

Jeen – Sorry for the late reply. Been really busy! Anyway, I think you can find a contact for your complaint on the Philips-avent website. Let us know if you have any success! Anyhow, I’d thrown away my broken PES bottle :P

I am using the BPA free PP ones.. the only thing i hate about it is when i sterilise it in the solution it floats.. bu tother than that it works great..

Marsha – I’m using AVENT’s PP bottles too. Work fine for me other than the fact that milk gets trapped in the additional ring. An extra part to scrub!

hi,may i know what’s d diff between pp and pes bottle?

audrey February 3, 2011 at 12:29 PM

I have been using MAM PP bottles for both my kids. Would like to understand more about PES bottle, what is differences between these two?

Kit February 3, 2011 at 8:26 PM

audrey – Since you’re using MAM PP bottles, you have nothing to worry about as MAM’s PP bottles are of really good quality, even better than AVENT PP bottles :D

PES bottles are made of a more brittle type of plastic? It’s similar to the PC bottles – the only difference is that PES bottles are “honey coloured” because the chemical BPA has been removed.

audrey – I forgot to tell you that I have this post comparing PC, PP and PES bottles: http://apregnantpause.net/2010/12/16/review-avent-pc-pp-and-pes-baby-bottles/
