Caroline - I guess I was lucky enough to be spared the horror stories about sore nipples. Mastitis - I avoided by gentle massage before the milk came in and also always ensuring that I empty the breasts regularly. I have a very low pain threshold, you see :D

I think I *did* have sore nipples at the beginning - I used Palmer's nipple cream, breast milk and just hung around in loose t-shirts for a few days. Latching the baby on correctly is key to avoiding this problem.

If baby opens up mouth wide like a baby bird, then he/she will take in the areola (not nipple!) and put pressure on the ducts that activate the flow of breast milk.

Because my baby fed on the dot of every 3 hours and then 4 hours, I didn't really have time to focus on sore nipples. I just had to be ready for the hungry fella.

My daughter was exactly like your little girl, which was why I had to express breast milk. If not for the Medela Freestyle and AVENT Isis Manual, I think she would have missed out on goodness of breastfeeding.

Like you said, whatever works best for you (and me!) :D

Perhaps I am not too keen on the notion of breastfeeding given I've heard lotsa stories of sore nipples & mastitis that explains the torment on bosom buddies ;) I know of many mums who like u prefer breastfeeding direct but I think I need more convincing that mode is for me. My daughter too prefers to sleep and gets extremely irate if the warmed up milk takes too long to be prepared or is cold ie. Not in her opinion an ideal temp. & she gets bossy wails & goes off to Zzz...it has been extremely trying for me. Thank God, I hve a supportive spouse who is great with parenting her in all aspects & eases the tension & stress some Moms are plagued with. I hve little problems with her night feeds. It's in the day that she is often distracted & prefers sleep during feeds that really get me worried she ain't ingesting enough thus can't grow & develop as fast as she should!

Caroline - Hahaha, I had a barracuda baby and boy, was breastfeeding a bliss. Breastfeeding was extremely easy because he would feed off one breast in a minute and then turn over for the other breast! After that, he was done and settled down for a nap :D

I'd only had to express milk when I started working and also when I had difficulty breastfeeding my baby girl who preferred to sleep. Given the choice, I prefer breastfeeding direct LOL

Freestyle pump works for me & I pump every 3hrly. Tempted to bring baby to breast but I've heard horror stories of "baracuda babies" that suckle too aggressively therein Ouch! Well, even LCs caution Moms that yes though widely advocated, breastfeeding is NOT without pain so if one opts for the mechanical pump, one ought to be prepared to toughen up her threshold & nipples as like they say with everything else "No pain, no gain" and besides each persons pain threshold differs so all I can say is conditioning works & also investing in a good pump & correct breastshield size aids the process definitely!
