As I wanted to stop using polycarbonate bottles, namely AVENT bottles (BPA-free or not), I decided to get MAM polypropylene (PP) bottles since they were popular among mothers.
Although I thought the many parts would be difficult to wash, it’s not bad having to wash an additional 2 parts. The good thing is that you can wash both the top and the bottom of the bottle, which you can’t do for most baby’s milk bottles.
I think the anti-colic function works because the girl could drink her milk without any problems…
My biggest problem with the MAM anti-colic bottle is with the Silky teat.
- The flow was too fast even for newborn size (No. 1). You can tell because the girl was getting really excited (fast breathing, hands flailing and legs kicking) as she couldn’t seem to chug down her milk fast enough. Even the confinement lady noticed this…
- The pamphlet states that the MAM anti-colic bottle is
“an easy switch between Mum and MAM” (i.e. supports breastfeeding)
I don’t think that’s the case.

You’ll notice that the child’s mouth isn’t as fully open (like a baby bird’s) as when a baby is breastfeeding.
Since my baby girl used the bottle early (with expressed and formula milk), I experienced nipple rejection when I started to breastfeed her during Week 2-3!
She had already latched on well and was sucking strongly. Due to my extreme fatigue and also to boost her weight gain (she’s a preemie at 2.3 kg), we were advised to give her supplementary bottles.
Sigh, I’d bought:
- 2 x 160 ml (pink and purple) and
- 2 x 260 ml (blue) MAM bottles
for the girl and the boy (who is firmly stuck on AVENT bottles) but looks like they’ll be in storage for now.
This is the second time I’m using MAM products – I didn’t like the MAM Small & Smart cup either.
As much as I like how cute MAM bottles are and that they are made of BPA-free PP plastic, they are not supportive of breastfeeding…
Anyone experienced otherwise?
Hubby and I had to rush out to buy some new bottles i.e. the Tommee Tippees, which didn’t turn out that great either. Thus, I’m back to AVENT. SIGH!

I agree with you on the teat. Brad was also struggling to drink from the bottle although Brandon had no issue as a newborn. Funny, isn’t it? I also ended up storing the 160ml bottles although luckily for me, I’d used them once with Brandon. Brad is using Bfree Plus now.
I love MAM bottle.
My baby is OK with it. Maybe he’s already 6 months by that time.
However, I’m switching to glass bottle now as it is much better that any plastic bottle; be it BPA-free. Mine is Coddletime.
you can switch the MAM teat to Avent teat… both the bottles / teat is switchable.
I did that for my kids. Avent teats easier to control the flow.

Uh, u were asked to give supplementary bottles? My daughther also premmie born on mother’s day this yr at 2.1kg. We were worried abt her weight too & also jaundice that drag on for 6 weeks. Also, was tired cause she latched on non-stop especially during the night. Asked her doc abt supplimenting but was instructed not too …. seems that preemies’ can’t process formula well. Guess each doc got their own style uh….

Feeding her has been anything but straightforward and I believe that it’s due to the hospital I’d chosen to give birth in – it would have been easy if I’d gone to my previous hospital. It’s a long story…
My struggle continues because I have 2 old ladies at home who can’t be trusted to be with her alone esp to put her to sleep. For them, the main reason she can’t sleep is because she’s hungry and pop, down goes 3 oz of formula!
You can’t imagine how weary I am having to fight (literally) with them on an almost daily basis…
Great to hear you are breastfeeding exclusively now! Guess it must have been a huge battle!!!!
Glenn was admitted just for 24hrs and they (the nurses) tried to bottle fed her and when she came back I have so much difficulties in breastfeeding her!
Why don’t you keep the bottles for later use (weaning off time)?

Wow …. if all the struggles, u still managed to continue breastfeeding. I salute u! Yes, ppl beside us makes a difference. Ur experience has taught me that even with 100% successful breastfeeding with 1st child, it doesn’t guarantee success for 2nd child & etc.
Thus, I shall prepare myself again physically & mentally for the challenges of breastfeeding when planning for the next child in 1-2 yrs time……
Oh, by the way, love ur blog, has been following ur blog since i was preggy 1 yr ago & pick up a lot of advice on motherhood frm urs & a few others mummy bloggers’ experience. Am 1st time mom myself & prior to this, am very much career minded woman. I can’t cook to save my life & today, my baby eats homemade baby food prepared by myself.

My baby girl birthweight was 2.03kg and now she is only 2.17kg at 3 weeks. She too having difficulty in copping with the flow and she prefers softer teat. What would you recommend? What happened to Tommy Tippees?
Samantha – Yup, it hasn’t been easy. I’ve not been able to breastfeed her 100%, which is something I’m not going *very* happy about. Hubby has to assure me again and again and againt that it’s OK. Sigh…

Julie – Tommy Tippee’s does not have a printed scale i.e. 1 oz, 2 oz, 3 oz so it’s VERY DIFFICULT to check the water level.
Although I wanted to stop AVENT, I had to go back to it because AVENT’s newborn, no. 1 and no. 2 teats are great for babies who are still breastfeeding. No nipple confusion!
I Love Mam anti colic 5 oz bottles! I breastfeed my soon and occassionally give a bottle of expressed milk. At 5 weeks my son rejected the bottle. I then went on a search for a bottle he would take with out gagging, and crying. I tried 10 differnt brands; medela, platex, avent, gerber, tommee tippee, first years breast flow, nuk, dr. brown wide neck , and standard bottle no luck. Finally I tried Mam and he took it fine! I was so excited since I will be return to work in 4 weeks! Man bottles were my life saver

My baby girl rejected the breast after it. In any case, she doesn’t really like the MAM bottles and prefer the AVENT PES / PP ones. Now, I have 2 spare 9 oz MAM bottles to let go…
