Hello! This is a really backdated post because I have just celebrated my full moon
Anyway, Mummy thought she’d still record my developments in the first 2 weeks of my life.
THE BEAUTIFUL
They say that every child is different and this holds very true for me and my big brother. First, check out my beautiful eyes. Not only are they huge with thick double eyelids, they also come with long and curly eyelashes!
Mum (and all the women) just love looking at my eyes. She keeps telling Papa about them but he’s not fallen for me yet because I am such a naughty girl LOL
My Gung Gung (paternal grandfather) just *adores* me and my Ma Ma (paternal grandmother) keeps saying I’m very, very pretty. Hmm…a vain pot in the making?
Here I am with my eyes fully open. I definitely look like my Grandpa’s side of the family but Mummy and Grandma can’t figure out whose eyes I have inherited because my Grandpa, great-Grandpa or great-Grandma’s eyes are nothing like that.
Oh well, thank you to whichever ancestor then!
THE BAD
While I’m a pretty little lass, I am one bad ass!!! Just check out the photo below showing the double swirls at the back of my head. The Chinese believe that babies with such patterns have very bad tempers (case in point = MUMMY).
According to Mummy, my big brother was a straightforward baby i.e.
- he yells when he’s hungry, nurses like a barracuda and then drops off to sleep.
- And he only yells when anyone or anything makes a noise – the only way around this is for everyone in the house to keep quiet.
- Plus, he wakes and sleeps on a schedule i.e. every 2 hours in the first and second month, every 3 hours in the third month and every 4 hours in the fourth month.
Me? I’m as unpredictable as the weather.
Initially, I sleep ALL THE TIME. I can sleep as long as 6 hours, which means 2 skipped feedings. When I wake up, I’m as hungry as a wolf and will nurse like there’s no tomorrow. I freaked Mummy out because I can nurse from both boobs and still down 3 oz of formula O_O
When I wake up on time, I’ll drink a bit and then nod off to sleep. And NOTHING will wake me up! Mummy has tried:
- nudging my chin,
- tapping my cheeks,
- soothingly calling me first “clever girl, wake up…”
- scolding me, “naughty girl ah, wake up!!!” and
- even shook a few drops of water on my eyes (from my water bottle!)
I’ll just blink my eyes, wrinkle my nose and even snort angrily but I’ll go back to sleep LOL
She gets so frustrated with me that she’ll give up and put me back on the bed and go back to sleep herself. Guess what? Once I’m out of her arms, I’ll wake up and yell! And the drama of picking me up – nursing me – I fall asleep – she tries to wake me – I’m put back on the bed repeats itself.
THIS is why my Papa hasn’t fallen for me yet. One night, Mummy was soooo tired, she propped me up on a pillow, popped the milk bottle into my mouth and got Papa to feed me.
I stared at him with my huge eyes but he wasn’t charmed – in fact, he scolded me!
“Quick, drink your susu! Why are you so slow? Why are you looking at me? Quick, drink, everyone wants to sleep! See…your Mummy is so tired…”
Bleagh!
THE DADDY’S GIRL
Papa is stunned at how weightless I felt in his arms (only 2.3 kg) that he doesn’t dare to carry me. Each time he calls Mum, he’ll ask if I have put on weight.
I’m a Daddy’s girl from day one because the moment he arrived at the hospital after landing, he went straight to NICU to see me. Mummy was very touched because she had been stuck to the hospital bed due to the C-section. He told Mum how he was shown the way to put on headgear, a face mask, gloves and a hospital gown.
He saw me with all the tubes stuck to my tiny body and the nurse showed him how to touch me. He also thought it’s a good Mum was stuck to the hospital bed because she wouldn’t have been able to bear looking at me with all the tubes etc.
GAINING WEIGHT
Every week, I had to return to the hospital for a weigh-in and a check-up. At the end of the two weeks, I was 2.6 kg and the paed praised Mum for her good work.
Looking at Mum’s panda eyes, she told her it’s OK to give me a formula feed at nights to catch up with her sleep but she encouraged me to continue breastfeeding.
JAUNDICE NO MORE
I have also shown no more signs of jaundice and the paed says to continue with my early morning dates with Mr. Sunshine.
Between 7.30 am – 8.30 am, Grandma or the confinement lady (“Auntie”) will take me outside for about 20-30 minutes in the early morning sun. They’ll remove my swaddling and also lift up my blouse so that my face (eyes covered with a hanky), hands, legs and tummy are exposed to the morning sun.
On days they can’t do this, Mum simply draws back the curtains in the room and I sleep really soundly. Once it gets a bit warm, she closes the curtains again leaving just a little gap for light.
I have now started yelling for my 10 am feed, which means she’s got to run! Ciao!
—> Check out this article on newborn jaundice
If your baby is breastfeeding, it’s possible for him to get jaundice if he doesn’t get enough breast milk. That’s because if your baby isn’t taking in sufficient fluid, he may not be able to eliminate the excess bilirubin through his stools.
Something else you can do on your own to help reduce jaundice is make sure that your baby is getting plenty of breast milk or formula — so he’ll have frequent bowel movements.
What’s the danger?
Again, in the vast majority of cases, jaundice isn’t anything to worry about. But if a baby’s bilirubin levels get too high — because his jaundice goes without any treatment and the levels continue to rise — it can cause permanent damage to the nervous system. A very small percentage of jaundiced newborns develop a condition called kernicterus, which can result in deafness, delayed development, or a form of cerebral palsy.
