REVIEW: AVENT Breast Shells

by Kit on October 5, 2009

One of the items on my shopping list in KL are these AVENT breast shells, which work to collect the milk dripping from the other breast when you’re breastfeeding or pumping on one.

As my milk volume was just enough (I wasn’t exactly a breastmilk fountain), every little drop was precious!

Thus, I was quite heartbroken when I could feel milk dripping out the other breast and soaking up my breast pad.

AVENT Breast shells

The Philips Avent Isis Comfort Breast Shellsincludes:

  • two ultrasoft backing cushions for comfort,
  • two ventilated breast shells to protect sore or cracked nipples and ease engorgement, and
  • two breast milk savers to collect leaking breast milk.

According to Philips Avent, the AVENT Breast Shells:

“…protect sore or cracked nipples during the healing process by providing exposure to air while protecting from clothing. The breast milk saver shells collect leaking milk during feedings and if feeding sessions have been delayed. They can also be useful for relieving engorgement.”

Bought at RM60.80 (at 20% discount in Mom’s Care in Midvalley), I feel that this 6-piece breast shell set is value for money since the ultrasoft backing cushions are similar to the ones in the Avent Isis Manual Pump set (with its patented “petals” that help with fast letdown).

I had sore nipples during the first month of breastfeeding – REALLY PAINFUL where you can’t even stand the touch of your clothes (don’t mention bra!). Since the breast shells provide a shielf between your nipples and clothing, I’m all for trying them :-)

By the way, I read that it’ll help those with inverted nipples too.

Medela sells TheraShells Breast Shellstoo but theirs were DOUBLE the price O_O

In the end, I find that the AVENT breast shells are quite comfortable as the milk collection shells were made of BPA-free PP plastic while the backing (the soft parts attached to your breasts) are of soft, silicone rubber. Very comfy and *great* to ease engorgement.

Hi KittyCat, I like to share my experience with breastshells but not Avent brand..I used Medela and it really helped when I breastfeed and pump my milk. As every single drop is so PRECIOUS!!

I also uses it when my nipple sore and cracked and when I need to apply medication on it. It helped to air it a bit and makes healing faster!

And the price of RM60+ for 6pcs is indeed a real bargain! I got my two pcs medela one at close to RM50!

CHeers!

hi there! I used the Avent breastshells. They are great to use. they just think of everything these days! Ocassionally, I’ll find that the cushions and the shells do not fit perfectly resulting in leakage (esp after repeated usage, sterilizing, wear and tear etc.) . But overall, it’s a really useful tool!

I leak horribly from one side so i really love these, it beats wasting money on disposable pads or having to wash re usable ones all the time because i soak right through those but i love that you can save the milk with this because there are times when i collect over 1.5 ozs just from wearing it for short periods when i cant feed or pump or when i’m feeding from the opposite side.

fashionasia – Congrats to your baby turning 2 also :D No worries about missing out on the AVENT breast shells. You can always get them for No. 2 later ;-)

Jessica – I know what you mean! I just hate it when the breast pads get all soppy too. Sigh, sure miss those breastfeeding days even though I moan and groan so much about it…
