Week 23 – The new ob-gyn

by SuperMom on August 12, 2009

One of the important “errands” we had when we got back was to visit the new gynae (I had been bugging many friends for their birth stories and opinions about their gynaes) and went to see one I felt would fit my needs.

The gynae turned out to be as nice and good as the Mummy who recommended said he’d be :-) He was incredibly patient with the toddler as he ran about the room, prodded at the doctor’s instruments and insisted on sitting up next to Mummy (and was finally taken out by Hubby!)

I was really glad he didn’t insist on a blood test since I gave him satisfactory answers and could bring him the lab reports at my next visit.

However, I was surprised at the number of medication he prescribed: Obical, fish oil and Sangobion (Merck) in addition to the folic acid I was taking. That led the total bill to amount to more than RM250! Also, his consultation fee was slightly on the high side…

I’ve also been asked to increase my fluid intake, watch my carbs and keep up my protein.

Then came the ultrasound scan…

He made some interesting remarks:
- baby’s doing really fine;
- baby’s really active (smiles). I totally agree because it’s been doing somersaults morning, afternoon and night! I even have trouble sleeping because it’ll prod at my tummy and force me to change positions frequently :P
- baby’s got nice chubby cheeks and
- finally, he freezed a frame and typed “GIRL”!

Week 23 ultrasound scan girl

I was ecstatic when I read what he’d typed and asked: “It’s a girl? Really?”

He said yes and took another look. Considering my sharpish tummy and the baby’s hyperactivity, I asked: “Are you sure there’s not a REALLY small penis there?”

Yikes, I think he was slightly exasperated because he said: “No, I’m sure. There’s nothing there. See?”

Because Hubby was still skeptical (he said ultrasounds aren’t 100% accurate), I’ve been examining the print-outs again and again. I don’t have the ones for our boy so we can’t really compare…

In any case, I’m on cloud nine for now :-)

So…will I go for this gynae? Although he’s GREAT, I didn’t warm up to the hospital, which seemed rather cold and quiet compared to the friendly, warm and buzzing place I went to previously.

Since I’ll be going there soon to get my prescription of Tamiflu (for standby), I will check out the new gynae there and make my final decision. Wish me luck!

Congratulations!! I bet you would be on cloud nine :) I think ultrasound quite accurate lah cos if it was a boy, it would have ‘stuck’ out haha. I could tell mine when he was only 10 weeks!

hey… I found this site which might interest you….

http://www.ob-ultrasound.net/genderfaq.html

I can see from my scan the ’3 lines’ so mine is ‘CONFIRMED’!

SuperMom: I had to respond to this first because your passion to nail down the gender made me LOL! Great link – I remember referring to Dr. Joseph Woo’s website (when we discovered the boy at 20 weeks – http://apregnantpause.net/2005/09/14/week-20-visit-to-the-doc/)

Fascinating points:

“The absence of the penis must not be taken as sufficient evidence of the fetus being a girl. The 3-lines sign which denotes the labia in the fetus is a very valid and accurate indication of the female gender.”

I went to check my ultrasound print-outs again and can’t find the 3 lines :-( That means I can’t GO PINK just yet…can’t wait for the next appointment. I’m tempted to see your gynaelah coz he sure sounds more educated with “the 3 lines” than the one I saw who simply repeated “there’s nothing there” after just a few quick scans!

Thanks, dear :-)

Julie August 21, 2009 at 4:44 PM

Congrats!

HN August 23, 2009 at 5:33 PM

Hahaha.. I was skeptical about the scan before but it turned out to be a correct one :) I had a pointed tummy and an extremely active baby inside me as well :D SO CONGRATS Kittycat! Time to grab all the pinky little clothes and have fun :)

SuperMom August 23, 2009 at 6:42 PM

Sigh…I wanted to try out the 3D scan but it needed an appointment and my Mum was nagging about ‘disturbing’ the baby before its time. Anyway, am just happy we find out now!

SuperMom August 25, 2009 at 6:50 PM

HN – Hahaha, now I know girls can be like that too. The boy turned out to be EXTREMELY ACTIVE inside and outside the womb. I’m bracing for the ‘girl power’ ahead because she’s started hiccuping too O_O
