REVIEW: Sebamed for babies and toddlers

by KittyMom on July 22, 2009

My son developed eczema at three months old and we find that we couldn’t use either the baby shampoo, the baby bath soap or the baby bubble bath from Johnson & Johnson.

It was a totally new experience for my family because we grew up using that range. In fact, I was still using Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo until I became pregnant and found that it didn’t work quite as well…

Since then, I’ve been recommending Sebamed Children’s Shampooand baby cleansing liquid to anyone whose baby or toddler is having similar skin problems.

Sebamed’s Baby Cleansing Liquid and Baby Shampoo
Sebamed’s Baby Liquid Cleanser worked like a charm on his baby skin because his crusty calves disappeared and so did the eczema on his forehead around the scalp area.

I’ve also tried Sebamed Baby Bubble Bath – pretty fun but a bit too sudsy for me. Since the bath becomes really bubbly with a little capful, his body still had suds after I lifted him out – I had to rinse him down with water again.

Since it’s part of his bath routine, we always look out for the 1 litre bottles on sale!

In a drier climate like China (especially autumn and winter), I’ve had to follow up with an aqueous cream or oil-based moisturizer. Finding this routine tedious, I use oil-based cleansers like Bübchen Bath Oil and Lotion.

The baby shampoo is great too – once, we forgot to bring it with us on a trip and had to use another brand, his scalp got really itchy and he’d scratch like crazy!

These are two items we never leave home without and we even stock them at the babysitter’s previously.

Sebamed Baby Lotion
Unlike the baby cleansing liquid and baby shampoo, Sebamed’s baby lotion isn’t very effective for him. Although I love the scent, it isn’t moisturizing enough.

I’ve also tried Sebamed’s Extra Soft Baby Cream both on his face, body and nappy area but find it the same as above. Drapolene works much better for his nappy area.

Here’s hoping my review will help Mums out there whose babies and toddlers have sensitive skin.

All my kid use only Sebamed! Expensive loh! I found 1 pharmacy in Ipoh, the cheapest for Cleansing Liquid – RM62 for 1000+200ml.

KittyCat: It is! I think his skincare expenses are higher than mine LOL

I find the scent for Sebamed things too itoxicating in a bad way. Girls have very dry skin and I’m using Citafil for them. Scentless.. and moisturising.

But I’m also trying to get organic lotion for them… safer.

ZMM – I don’t mind it since I use it sparingly per instructions and it works well on him. I use Cetaphil moisturizing lotion on him (though I don’t like the ‘scentless’ smell) – didn’t know they had bath products too. If it’s cheaper, I don’t mind giving them a try.

Update: My Mann allergic to Sebamed!!no wonder always had rushes wholebody. So I needto change – organic cleanser. Ordoyou think other commercial brand better than Sebamed?

KittyCat August 4, 2009 at 11:45 PM

Allisia – Uh-oh, sorry to hear that! Would you be able to look around for Bubchen? Look out for baby cleansers marked ‘hypoallergenic’ as these are usually formulated for sensitive skin.

my lil girl has always had red rashes on her skin.. and we always notice her scratching .. after sometime, it is actually due to her shower gel.. it seems like she cant use anything scented.. so we tried this sebamed as well.. and it works well on her, alhamdulillah.. her skin is now better.. no more red spots.. drynes?? hmm so far it didnt dry up her skin. we use sebamed lotion a lil too

Zoora – Looks like my baby girl has better skin than the boy because she doesn’t show any reactions to the Johnson & Johnson baby bath she got as a gift. Anyway, once that finishes, we’ll just Sebamed for both kids. Easier that way! :D

Hamna – Sorry to hear about your poor baby. I know how it feels! First, you need to know the cause of the itching before you take the next step to solve it.

You didn’t mention if your boy has red rashes? If yes, he could be suffering from:

a) an allergic reaction to formula milk – my son developed a red rash around his neck, swollen eyes or swollen ears when I tried various brands of formula milk. I ended up breastfeeding as much as I could and supplemented with Lactogen…

or

b) suffering from infantile eczema – please read this post http://apregnantpause.net/2006/07/05/aargheczema/ to see if that’s the case?

If it’s either of the above, then I hope my posts help you decide what to do.

By the way, Sebamed protective facial cream doesn’t work for him either (mentioned in post above). In the end, I used Johnson & Johnson’s original baby cream, which I apply on him while he’s still moist from his bath. This helps the skin to absorb the moisturizer better.

I hope this helps. Please let me know what happens, ok?

thanx a lot … he was totally on breastfeeding till his 3rd month… i tuned him little on formula milk just bcoz if we have to go outside from home he can have it there … but now in 4th month he almost left breastfeeding… doctor suggested S 26 when he was born… i was out from the country one month back for one month n there he mostly had formula milk … may be he found it easy n dnt want to go back on breastfeeding… im trying to get him back on bf but its not helping me at all… the month i was out of country n he had formula milk he was absolutely fine there … but as we came back he got this problem within a day or two… im from pakistan n lives in Qatar … he didn’t hav any problem there… dnt knw its coz of formula milk or not… he still remains very active all day n responds a lot … but as he becomes sleepy or wake up from the sleep the itching starts…

sometimes his face blush too much n mostly its normal…

i didn’t find his skin dry … i was using jhonson’s baby lotion before sebamed protective facial cream… should i continue sebamed or swich to the jhonson’s back???

then we thought its bcoz of his growing hairs that irritates him from the ears n he starts itching … yesterday we made him bald but problem still persists…

can’t find out the reason thats why shared here :( coz its my first baby n dnt hav any experience like that …

he can’t hav sound sleep n it makes me very worried … now tell me what should i do ??

Regards ..

Hamna – Sorry for the late reply. Been really busy!

From your explanation, it doesn’t sound like the formula milk is the problem. Perhaps it’s the change in location? Dust, humidity levels, stress of traveling and bath/skincare lotions have a strong effect on our skin, even more for the baby’s skin.

Why don’t you go back to the J&J cream since it didn’t cause any problems earlier? I hope it works.

I can sense how worried you are especially when he isn’t getting enough sleep – you probably are not either.

Have you tried using aloe vera gel or calamine lotion (used for chicken pox) or even cucumber slices?

They are cooling and soothing and quite safe for baby provided he doesn’t get any on his hands and mouth. Take care and I hope that you have a Happy New Year!

Hanna, i will advise u switch back to breastfeed. My eldest girl is allergy (luckily not serious) to formula and even dairy products. If she took it too much she will started will itching skin too. And the formula he took even same brand but produced fromdifferent country also is one the cause too. (Kit, u know what i mean.)

J&J cream cantained some carcinogen substances, took the organic lotion will be better.

Kit, Mann is using organic products now. Costly!

Kit January 10, 2011 at 10:20 PM

Allisia – Thanks for your feedback. I hope that Hamna and her baby boy are sleeping peacefully now.

Sigh, I can’t afford to use only organic stuff on them thus I look around for what’s available and affordable…

FYI, I’m not using the J & J cream now and I believe they came out with an organic range of creams and lotions too. Haven’t them checked them out though.

Hamna January 19, 2011 at 10:22 PM

thnx 2 both of u for ur feedback ….. i got u allisia… yea that can be the problem … actually the formula milk he was taking in pakistan was of singapore here it is of ireland … may be this can be the reason … he was a lil bit improved as i started j&j’s cream and sebamed wash .. but now from last few days he started itching again …. i consulted doctor but he said he is absolutely fine n skin is also normal.. still having the same prob … after trying a lot he does not get back to breast feeding :( which lotion or cream is better if i dont use J&J ???

Kitty March 16, 2011 at 9:54 PM

Hamna – Have you tried Cetaphil? I am using it now for my baby’s dry cheeks. Will share more later when I have time ok.

Sapna – Try searching it on Google? I’m sure you will have Sebamed and many other brands in California. Good luck!

Vmax – Ya, I do a light rinse after they get up from the bath to wash off the residue but not too heavy a rinse that it’ll wash off the moisturizer :D
