A Pregnant Pause

Having a baby: Is it the gynae or the hospital?

Now that we’ve decided to go home for the delivery and confinement, I’m back to my original problem of: choosing a gynae. As I gripe about this, I must remember that Albert Einstein said, “The only constant is change

Well, it will be 4 years since I had my first child, I can’t very well expect my good old gynae to be where he is, right? After all, Presidents change, economies change, people move, people die, people change careers, what’s to expect in 4 years???

We’re still not sure what happened to my dear old gynae because he’s moved from a very-established-hospital to a not-so-well-known hospital.

Since I need to find a new gynae (and a new hospital) for my baby’s birth, I’m wondering: is it the gynae of the hospital?

For my first pregnancy:

  • Early labour was more than 24 hours for me :P
  • I had a terribly slow dilation
  • Nitrous oxide (Entonox gas) didn’t work for me…
  • I needed an epidural
  • I had a BIG baby (3.78 kg) with a BIG head (which he now claims is s-m-a-l-l)!
  • I have a VERY, VERY low pain threshold
  • My old gynae knew this even though I’d declared ahead of time that I wanted NO epidurals – 100% natural. After a few appointments, he just smiled whenever I discussed this with him.

When I delivered my first child, I am truly thankful to God for blessing me with a really kind and skillful anaesthesiologist. I recall how nice he sounded through the haze and pain (I was shaking!!!):

“I’m going to insert the epidural now, ok? You won’t feel any more pain after this…but now, I need you curl yourself up into the tightest ball you can, ok? I promise you, no more pain after this…”

The bustling, motherly Nurse who greeted me so cheerfully in the morning and fed me some ice-chips, with strict warning NOT to drink all of it. She’d helped me with the pushing too when the contractions came strong and fast.

Lastly, my gynae was very fatherly and even invited Hubby to take part in the birthing process, showing him the baby’s crown and also asked if he wanted to cut the umbilical cord.

The cold, objective one, Hubby commented that the gynae examined each piece of the placenta very carefully to ensure that EACH one was out. He also did the stitching up carefully.

Breastfeeding support was excellent at this hospital and so was my post-natal care.

Our child’s paediatrician is also from this hospital

I would really love to hear the thoughts of Moms out there who has gone through labour. What do you think?

  • Should I try out a new gynae and stick to this hospital?
  • Or try out a new gynae at a new hospital?
  • Or should I just shut the **** up and do a home birth all by myself???

    1. Coming for Blog visiting. :)
You could share your posts at: ArticlePingerDOTcom too. :)

    2. Ah, looks like you’ve decided to come home. Hoorah! I think you will find that family support helps. If I were in your shoes, I will probably stick with the same hospital and a new gynae. At least there is only one “unknown”. In a mathematical equiation, having one unknown is easier to solve than two!

    3. hi.. i am also thinking of the same thing rite now.. is it the gynea or its the hospital.. this is my second experience, so this made me think of the same thing like you.
But i think, if your previous hospital and gynea is great.. why dont just stick to it.. they know your history, they’ve had all you blood test result, and you already are comfortable with the staff and place. And maybe the gynea will be more nicer as you are his loyal-patient :D

    4. Paik Ling – Thanks for the logical reasoning LOL Eh…you say ‘hooray’ means I’m getting a visit from you ya!!!

Zoora – My gynae’s not at this hospital, that’s the problem. You mentioned a good point – I wonder if they’ll still have my records since he’s left??? Thanks ya

    5. i have all diff gynaes at diff hospitals. In fact, because No.1 and No.3 went under the public system.. I didn’t even know who my gynae was! I just went with God, trust in him, and it turned out all ok!

    6. Hmm…I did a double whammy! I changed hospital AND gynae, mainly due to logistics reason as we’ve moved since I gave birth 4 years ago and this new hospital is much nearer to our present home. Midway, I changed to a third hospital and gynae after an incident with the second gynae. So does that qualify as a quadruple whammy? Ha ha! I don’t know what to expect in this third hospital, but the facilities, etc look better than the first hospital so I’m just hoping for the best.

    7. Well, my friend, if I am in your situation, I will choose based on where is the skillful anaesthesiologist. To me, anaesthetic is a very important process, anything went wrong will cause a big impact in our life. Same as you, my pain threshold is also very low. :) Anyway, this is just my personal point of view and you know that I am not a mum YET! Hehe…..

    8. hi there, thx for visiting my blog :) . sorry we don’t travel for shoot for now hehe..too high cost lerr..

all the best in deciding. no matter what, i’m sure u know what’s best for baby :)

    9. this sounds like a dilemma to me too…:(
hospital with good facilities r impt so is a gynae that u r comfortable with !! perhaps u stick to the same good hospital & get the list of gynaes that has admission rights to that hospital & try out a few until u find one that’s good. good luck to you…

    10. i wld stick to the gynae but since u mentioned tht he’s in a not-so-good hospital, then maintain in the same hosp and search for a new gynae?

but really, i wld stick to the gynae coz my gynae was good and so were the midwives but i can’t say the same for the rest of the staff at the hospital. both my girls, we had a bad experience with the hospital staff and service. after haye li, i told my gynae, if not for him, i wld have gone to a better hospital already. anyway, if ever there is a 3rd one, i wld go to the other hospital where my gynae also delivers.

    11. maybe u can try enfa’s asian network to find more about paed and gynae around… where do u stay btw? where is home? hehe

    12. Mott & A Mom’s Diary – WOW! I’m speechless :-)

Hooi Ling – Hehe, I think you know what a scaredy cat I am…

      Jazzmint – I understand. Let’s see…

Jacss – Ya, I’ll most likely do that. List of gynaes with admission rights? Didn’t know we practise that in Malaysia. I should check it out with the new gynae someone recommended.

Syn – Sigh…I couldn’t do that because this other hospital really isn’t that great. Will catch up with friends when I’m back and find out more.

Wen – Thanks, will try. You no see my badge ah? I’m a proud Penang blogger :-)

    13. Hai….thot you were coming to your in law’s place and could see you & Lucas. Too bad it’s back to Penang. Good luck in your decision, maybe can check with Angeleyes ;)
