Last Friday, I asked the boy out of the blue:
Me: When the baby comes out, you share your toys with the baby, ok?
Boy: OK (nods three times. Really cute coz his nods are rather mechanical)
Me: Wah, really? You’ll share your toys?
Me: Books leh…share your books with the baby also ok?
Boy: OK (nods three times.)
Me: (very happy) Good boy! Can share your CDs with the baby also?
Boy: Yes. (nods three times).
Me: Wah…so clever! Share toys with baby, hor? When the baby comes out, Boy can play with the baby ok? Mummy sayang lor…(grabs the tot and smothers him with loud smooches. He, of course, loves it.)
On Saturday, we had another talk…
Me: Boy…there’s a baby in Mummy’s stomach.
Boy: NO! No have baby. Boy come out already. Boy is a big boy.
Me: Yes, Boy is born already. Now there’s a new baby.
Boy: (laughs) No…no baby. Only stomach!
Me: Yes, see Mummy’s stomach is so big. Oo (Hokkien-There’s) baby inside (sorry, I can’t stop the Manglish)
Boy: (stops in his tracks and looks. Touches my stomach and giggles.)
Me: Come talk to the baby. Say “hello baby”.
Boy: (cups his hands on my stomach and soft says) Hello baby!
Me: Say “This is Boy”
Boy: (whispers) This is Boy…
Me: Ok, sayang baby…
Boy: (gives baby a cute little kiss). Ee-yer! Mummy’s stomach smelly!!! (I’ve got olive oil on it)
Me: Smelly meh? Come here…where’s the handsome boy? (grabs him for a hug and a kiss)
Boy: Here!!! (points to himself)
Me: Where’s the naughty boy?
Boy: There! (points to me and giggles like crazy)
Me: Mummy’s not a boy…
Boy: Mummy naughty girl!
I am over the moon that he’s finally come around to accepting the baby. Oh well, with toddlers, you never know how they’ll react later.
