I was a full-time working Mum when I was pregnant so looking good in a corporate environment was important. As my job involved meetings with senior managers, visitors and vendors, I still wanted to be taken seriously even though I’m nauseous or ravenous 24-7.
Thankfully, my sister and my friend gave me bags and bags of used maternity clothes, which gave me a base to start with.
The first pieces I removed were the cutesy, flowery, pastel- or brightly-coloured maternity dresses which would make ANYONE think of Ronald McDonald, Teletubbies or the A-teens the minute they saw me…
At work, I wore mostly plain-coloured tops because prints (except for small, simple patterns) make you look BIGGER and are difficult to match sometimes.
Since I wear mostly stretch pants on regular days and capris or jeans on casual Fridays, I could still easily match them with a nice XL-sized tailored shirt or blouse.
I wish I knew about the the BellaBand, which is:
“…a seamless knit band you wear at your waistline, over your unbuttoned pre-pregnancy pants, over slightly big maternity pants, or around the waistband of any maternity style that falls down around your hips.”
When the tummy grew bigger, I resorted to one-piece maternity dresses because I didn’t feel comfortable with a waist band then. Many of my sister’s maternity dresses didn’t fit as she’s way, way taller than me – I had to shop for new clothes!
I was grateful one of my former students offered to shop with me although I rejected her at first, thinking she’d find it BORING. The dear girl was so helpful she found 3-4 sweet looking dresses to tide me through the third trimester.
After the pregnancy, I’d definitely need a Belly Bandit (or bengkung as it’s called in Malay), which is an eco-friendly, bamboo post-partum band celebrities like the ultra-svelte Jessica Alba wore to get their pre-pregnancy shapes back. No more jelly-belly for me, thank you.
Life is good for the pregnant mother now because there are LOADS of places we can get stylish maternity wear. No reason to look fat and frumpy nowadays
Have you shopped for maternity clothes yet? Show us what you bought, ok?

hahaha… I only have a few maternity wear. Not worth it to buy lots. My ex-colik used to laugh at me, cause I only have 5 maternity tops.
And I bought just a normal bikini (bigger size) for my maternity swim wear. Nothing special.
Malaika’s Mummy – That’s a smart move! Save even more money
Wah, I was using the U’s pool lah – NO bikinis allowed!
any recommend for online website to buy for maternity wear? looking for it for sister. tq
