The minute he went missing

Once when my sister, my new friend and I were shopping for clothes in a small clothing outlet in China, Lucas went missing for a few seconds.
The three of us were stationed in the north, south-west and south-east sections of the store (which had only two exits). I was in the south-west side and was tailing him with my eye. He was ambling from east and headed towards the west and I looked out for his bobbing head - ready to catch him before he ran out the exit.
But his head never appeared!
I lunged immediately for the exit and called out to him, “Lucas! Lucas!” but my heart almost stopped when I couldn’t see him in that section.
I quickly yelled out to my sister who also looked around her side. Hearing this, my friend also started looking.
I also asked the blur-looking sales assistants if they’d seen my son. They snapped back to life but replied,
“Meiyou.”
For a few moments, I think I was silently praying,
“Come out, come out, where are you?”
and desperately looked outside the store and inside its small space again.
Luckily, my friend who had come inside the store to look popped out again and found him:
He was just outside the north exit with his nose pressed against the display window!
She quickly picked him up and brought him to me.
You CAN’T imagine my relief and happiness when I had this cute, cuddly and dribbling little fella back in my arms again. Of course, he struggled to be let loose again.
I was so happy to see him that I didn’t scold him - I only managed to tell him that he should always stop when he hears me calling.
“Didn’t you hear Mummy call you?”
He was only 22 months old then and wasn’t speaking yet. I’m not sure if he understands but one thing’s for certain.
I’m only going to shop in enclosed outlets or with Hubby (who can concentrate on him 100% and is not a believer in retail therapy). This experience showed me that an active toddler can still escape you even if you have 3 adults on guard!
No way am I going to lose sight of this little fella again!

Hubby - I told you one of the nights after it happened. I think the sentence endeds with, “This fella is so fast…next time, I’m not going to let him run free when we go out. He’ll always be in the stroller when he’s with me”
You were not listening, maybe? I’m glad you’re reading the blog.

Syn - It was! I’ve never moved faster in my life. It’s unbelievable how quick & unpredictable he is. Yes…I watch him like a hawk now.
