Strollers – McLaren, Peg Perego, Combi, Graco

by Kit on October 19, 2007

As December inches closer, I’m down to my final big purchase – a new stroller.

Last year, I got a Graco Citisport for him and have found it a really good buy. It’s a sturdy, easy-to-maneuver, one-hand close stroller.

The Citisport is considered heavy at 6.8 kg but still OK as I either have a car to dump it in or my strong, macho hubby (ahem, ahem) to do the handling.

My only gripe is that it doesn’t come in a travel system like the Peg Perego Aria, which Ryeli’s smart mummy got. Thus, the boy didn’t travel much in the car during his early months and had to be lugged in/out the carseat – which the grouchy little fella doesn’t like at all!

Now that he’s getting taller and outgrowing the Graco, I’m looking out for a light buggy that I ALONE can easily fold and carry. Furthermore, I will be walking or taking taxis. Sigh, there goes my wheels…

Anyway, the Combi strollers that Zara’s Mama and Angeleyes use immediately came to mind.

However, search and hunt as I did in KL and Penang, I could not find the ones they use at a reasonable price. The ones I’ve seen so far have been hitting RM1K and also don’t seem to accommodate kids older than 2 years.

When we were in 1 Utama last week, this helpful lady suggested McLaren but I immediately brushed it aside since it’s known as the Mercedes due to popular use among celebrities.

However, she surprised me by saying that there’s a MacLaren Volo which retails at RM499, which is a price I can live with considering the use I’ll be getting out of it.

Quick as lightning (well, as fast as 60 kg can go!), I went to check the McLaren Volo out at Mothercare and love it. It’s light, easy to unfold/close and quite sturdy. I can’t recall its reclining features but was quite happy to see that towering toddlers would be sit comfortably in it.

The question now is: should I sell off the Graco or keep it?

Here’s the dilemma:

KEEP IT – can use for No. 2 if he/she arrives next year and save $$$ but will need a carrycot that doesn’t fit into it or the carseat.

SELL IT – heartbreak saying goodbye to a stroller even Grandma loves. End up buying a travel system that sets us back RM1K plus. I find it quite hard to part with it.

Mummies – would love to hear from you! Thanks a million

Yikes, I’ve got to go as he has just woken up and is pulling me back to bed!!!

Wahh…RM499?? Ehehe..call me cheapskate but it might be worth as you say it is..i wouldn’t know how much you need it. The company’s daily allowance would easily cover that tho..so in return you have to cook instead of eating out a few nights. (aiya, sorry i didnt answer your question)

You sure Lucas still wants to sit on a stroller?? We hardly use the stroller once the boys started walking. In fact the stroller is now sitting in a corner collecting dust.

Oh by the way, you have been tagged… errr 4 tags (quickly run away). Don’t worry, if you don’t have time to do them.

Yeah, it is worth it. I’m cheapskate for a lot of things but not baby stuff.

What company’s daily allowance??? I don’t get any allowances, my dear.

WMD – Thanks for asking! Yeah, we get good use out of the stroller as that’s the place for him to settle down after running around like a wild animal out of captivity =) It’s esp important now since got no car…

4 tags?? I’ve just seen them – very pandai huh tagged me for all of them LOL Will try to do them when I’m free-er ok?

keep it, you will need it whn baby no. 2 comes and saves u the trouble of looking for another one. u survived it with lucas, u shld be fine with no.2 and more! ;)

i want 2 get the mcclaren too but hubby is saying it’s 2 expensive. we’re using sil’s friend’s one now in LA…thank goodness too as don’t like the idea of lugging one back home but if i come across one which is lesser than RM499 here, i just might get one in the end!

Ryeli – thanks for ur feedback. I think I’ll keep the Graco too. We got the MacLaren and yeah, you should grab it if you can find it cheaper there…esp if Christmas sales has started already ;-)

Keep the stroller… or else you will be hunting high and low when #2 comes around.

Btw, we are looking for that Combi storller too for my brother but after asking a few shops only to be told that they no longer carry that model/no longer in production… what a pity, coz everyone seemed to like it…. it’s only 3.5kg! Great for going up and down the buses and trains!

Angeleyes – wow, it’s that light! You should hang on to it too. Btw, I saw a new Combi stroller on sale in eBay but not sure which model it is. Let me know if you’re keen ok? You’re the Combi expert ;-)

i used to have combi for my baby,he ’s now 8 months plus akready outgrew the stroller..so we got a maclaren quest sport for him…not as lite as combi but we do satisfy with its functionality and the trendy look as well, plus, we consider it much safer for our baby as it s more stable especially when we are in the middle of people’s crowd…(scary lol if someone’s bump into a lite stroller with our baby in it,mite ‘terbalik’ lol!

KC: You’re a MacLaren fan too? Quest was TOO expensive for us but I’d love a reclining stroller so he can sleep after all that bouncing, jumping and running! Oh yes, a stable stroller is very important – looks like you made the right choice :-)
