“Life is full of surprises”
Boy, did this come true for us recently. In May, I was busy catching up frantically with final revisions on my masters thesis and was burning the midnight & twilight oils for weeks and weekends.
And then we had an upcoming one-month-old twins birthday party in KL early June, which we turned into a very rushed one-day trip. And just when you thought you could lay back and stretch these poor old bones, Hubby is swamped with visitors for a week and I was left to recover from my hectic schedule or so I thought.
The signs were there but we must have been either too busy/blur to understand them:
a. Firstly, I was dead tired every evening and was in bed by 9 pm (!!!) every night despite missing out on all my favorite TV shows and sitcoms.
b. Around my birthday in May I actually wanted to retch at the sight of seafood delights at EQ…somehow, clam chowder, prawn salad, and even a succulent grilled cod fish made me green.
c. A wonderful box of 15 Dunkin’ Donuts didn’t even look tempting despite their shiny, glazed, plump and mouth-watering shapes (of course they aren’t Krispy Kremes but beggars can’t be choosers).
d. Another giveaway was the week-long preference for bland, clear soups instead of my usual hankering for char koay teow, tandoori chicken, fried rice, belacan rice or nasi lemak.
At dinner time, Hubby usually asks me what I’d like and I was going: Mon “Soup”, Tue “Soup”, Wed “Soup” and etc. We thought it was the gastritis May had brought on but my suspicions were brewing…
One night after ta-pauing some delicious Malay sup bee hoon, I popped into the pharmacy and got myself THE KIT. I’d tried it once in March when we wanted to test the theory of shotguns and that had come out singular blue so I thought I might as well try again. And just like a Hans Christian Andersen tale, lo and behold - 2 bright pink lines!!!
First, I was “Wow, I’m pregnant.”
And when it hit me, I went “Oh my God, I’m PREGNANT!!!”
Finally, it hit me again and I just sat there in the bathroom smiling widely and getting excited thinking, “Wow, I’m pregnant!:-)”
Of course, Hubby had to choose that night to come home late and when he did, I waited for him to settle down and pick up his newspaper. Instead, Mr Clean decided to brush his teeth and I couldn’t wait anymore so I did a little show-and-tell.
First, I showed him the indicator and when he nodded, I showed him Pinky Lines — this took a while to sink in and when it did, his eyes grew wide and I thought he was going to choke on his toothpaste (N.B. not a good idea to surprise anyone brushing his teeth with life-changing news).
Next, I discovered that some men do not react the way you’d think they react in all those Hallmark movies — after a hug and a kiss, the first words he said were,
“This means we won’t be able to go for a holiday?!”.
And then later,
“Ooh…Looks like it’s due in February - gasp, we won’t be able to go back to Kuching for Chinese New Year.”
Ok, anyone married to an East Malaysian should know by now that their state always comes second after food, football or fun.
And then the fun & fears *really* began.
BABY NOTES: I’m tiny but growing fast! Your baby is about the size of a small bean, about a half an inch long, this week. If you could see inside yourself, you’d find the baby has an oversized head in proportion to the body.
The facial features are forming with dark spots where the eyes are, openings where the nostrils will be, and pits to mark the ears. Protruding buds that will become the arms and legs are more noticeable now. The hands and feet look like tiny paddles. You can’t hear it yet, but the heart is beating about 150 beats per minute (or roughly twice the rate of yours.)
